Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is the leading form of alternative medicine in healthcare today. Chiropractors complete the same undergraduate programs that other doctors complete followed by 4 years of chiropractic school. In chiropractic school, emphasis is placed on subjects like anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and orthopedics instead of pharmacy. Chiropractic care corrects misalignments of the spine called “subluxations”. These subluxations alter the body’s proper biomechanics and shifts stress to muscles, joints, and soft tissues which results in pain. Through chiropractic adjustments, these misalignments are corrected, relieving stress from painful areas of the body and restoring balance. Chiropractic has been proven to successfully treat back pain, neck pain, sciatica, headaches, hip pain, knee pain, tendonitis, sprains, and strains.

Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common injuries patients report when coming to a chiropractor. Back pain can be the result of many different things including misalignments of the spine, muscle injury or spasm, sprains, strains, or trauma. Chiropractors are specially trained to use palpation, range of motion testing, orthopedic tests, and radiographic examination to diagnose the specific cause of your back pain and then address those issues to resolve the problem. Taking an aspirin only covers up the pain instead of fixing the cause. Through the use of chiropractic adjusting, stretching, and physical therapy, chiropractors can fix the underlying cause of back pain. By prescribing home stretching and exercise routines you can then strengthen the area to avoid future injuries.

Pregnancy Care

Dr Alorna Dolan specializes in the treatment of pregnancy related pain and is one of the foremost experts in the chiropractic care of pregnancy related issues. During pregnancy, aches and pains are very common due to hormonal changes and weight gain. She sees patients at all stages of the pregnancy process for all kinds of problems. Some of the most common problems experienced during pregnancy include back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, hip pain, arm pain, numbness and tingling, carpal tunnel, and foot pain. As the body adapts to the changes of pregnancy, stress is placed on new parts of the body that are normally not affected in our everyday lives. By adjusting misalignments of the spine and stretching tight muscles, chiropractic can remove stress from painful areas and balance the body.

Dr Alorna is also certified in the Webster Technique for mothers carrying in the breech or transverse position. Misalignments of the sacrum can cause tightening and torsion of specific muscles and ligaments which cause a constraining effect on the uterus. The stress put upon the uterus prevents the baby from comfortably assuming the vertex position. This technique is widely recommended by obstetricians, midwives, and birthing consultants because of the great results it achieves without any danger to the mother or baby.

Pediatric Care

Dolan Family Chiropractic is one of the few chiropractic offices in the greater Aurora area that has a doctor on staff that is actually certified in the treatment of pediatric patients through the International Chiropractic Pediatrics Association. Dr Alorna Dolan completed a 2 year post graduate certification through the ICPA and has treated a wide variety of problems ranging from torticollis, sports injuries, and growing pains, to constipation/diarrhea, colic, and asthma. She has treated patients as young as 2 days old and ranging up to early teens. She is trained in cranial sacral therapy to treat malformations of the skull in infants and toddlers, decreasing the need for orthopedic helmets and braces. Chiropractic care for children is backed by years of research and great results. Dr Alorna is always available to address any questions or concerns you might have about pediatric chiropractic treatments. Feel free to call anytime to discuss any issues your children might be having and find out if chiropractic can help.

Dolan Family Chiropractic uses physiotherapy along side chiropractic care to achieve the best results. Chiropractors often use therapies such as electric muscle stimulation, ultrasound, traction, light therapy, and intersegmental roller tables to treat tight and sore muscles and provide quality, lasting pain relief to injured areas. The office also incorporates ice therapy to decrease acute swelling and inflammation and heat therapy to loosen tight muscles. These therapies are non-invasive and very effective at reducing pain levels and increasing the range of motion in injured areas. Therapies such as electric muscle stimulation and ultrasound painlessly penetrate down to injured tissues such as tendons, ligaments, and muscles, and reduce swelling and break up trigger points and knots. They are extremely helpful in treating back pain, neck pain, sports injuries, tendonitis, bursitis, and sprains and strains. These physiotherapy techniques speed up recovery times, and work as a perfect supplement to chiropractic care.

Kinesio Tape

Kinesio Tape is an up and coming form of athletic taping that is currently being used by athletes at all levels around the world. It has been showcased in recent Olympic Games and by professional athletes in baseball, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. This colorful athletic tap is applied to injured areas and provides support and therapy while allowing the athlete full range of motion. Its primary effects include the following: It corrects muscle function by strengthening weak muscles and reconditioning abnormal muscle tension. It improves localized circulation of both blood and lymphatic fluids which results in the reduction of swelling and inflammation. This allows proper circulation which decreases pain and speeds up recovery. Application of the tape causes neurological suppression of pain and the tape itself helps to reposition joints into proper alignment for maximum performance. Kinesio tape is not just for athletes. It helps with everyday muscle and joint aches and pains and is used to treat back pain, neck pain, tendonitis, and joint pain.

Corrective Exercises and Stretching

As we age our bodies become less elastic and more fibrous. This is why we could fall down the stairs when we were kids and come out the other side unharmed. Now a fall down the stairs results in a visit to the emergency room. Stretching is one way we can keep ourselves more flexible and thus more resistant to injury. Drs Collin and Alorna Dolan perform specific stretching protocols in the office to help loosen up tight muscles and reduce muscle strain. By stretching tight muscle and strengthening weak muscles we can return balance to the body and remove stress from injured areas. Patients are then sent home with simple stretching routines that will further help to keep the body loose and help the body to recover quicker from injury. Strengthening exercises help to stabilize injured areas and reduce the possibility of future injury. Dr Collin has been trained in core stabilization exercises and is available upon request.

Light Therapy

Light therapy is a state of the art therapy used to treat a wide variety of injuries. It is outstanding in the field of pain management and successfully treats generalized muscle and joint pain, tendinitis, bursitis, sprains, and strains. It uses concentrated light to painlessly penetrate down to injured muscles, joints, tendons, and ligaments and drastically increases the rate of healing. It does this by increasing localized circulation by causing capillary formation, which allows proper passage of blood in and out of the injured area. It also stimulates the release of the energy producing molecule ATP which allows injured cells to uptake nutrients quicker and removes cellular waste more efficiently. This combination results in accelerated healing. Light therapy has also been shown through studies to increase DNA and RNA synthesis which increases cellular recovery from injury. Lastly, the penetrating light increases phagocytosis, which is the process by which cellular debris and waste is broken down and removed from the body. In general, light therapy increases the speed of recovery and helps to minimize scarring.

Custom Made Foot Orthotics

Our feet are the foundation of our bodies. Just like in a house, if the foundation is not level then the above structure will distort, leaving an unbalanced frame. Custom made foot orthotics help balance the 3 arches of the foot to provide a strong and balanced foundation for our bodies to stand on. Flat feet can be the source of foot and ankle pain but it can also be the underlying cause of leg, knee, hip, and low back pain. By balancing the foundation of the feet, it removes stresses off the joints of the leg and levels the pelvis and hips, which in turn takes stress off the low back.

Dolan Family Chiropractic uses the state of the art computer scanning system from Foot Levelers to diagnose imbalances in the feet and to custom build an orthotic to specifically fit your feet. Unlike generic, store bought orthotics, custom made orthotics are built to fit every curve and arch of your feet. In a weight bearing position, the patient steps onto the computer sensitive screen and is scanned into a computer system that diagrams every drop and turn of the feet. The computer system then designs the perfect fit orthotic for your feet that can be placed into any shoe interchangeably. Custom fitting shoes and sandals are also available upon request.
